Feel like taking an adventure but can’t leave your computer? Take a peek at Seasick Mama’s (given name: Marial Maher) new video for her single “Man Overboard” from the forthcoming EP Tip Top Shape. Seasick Mama’s brand of unique, rock-tinged indie pop fits somewhere between early No Doubt and Rilo Kiley with some of Karen O’s frontwoman charisma sprinkled – the resulting sound works extremely well.
Marial Maher is equal parts singer, songwriter, performer and model, and “Man Overboard” showcases it all. The video is a dramatic mini-movie, or maybe even a telanovela, in which the Maher, as Seasick Mama, is trying to escape from an older man in some kind of mansion or hotel. The soundtrack to this interesting story is the song itself, with its tempo changes and pauses perfectly matching the plot’s rising action, conflict and resolution. The video follows her mental and actual escape from where she’s staying, while the man begrudgingly watches from a control room, but fails to act until the very end.
It’s very clear that Seasick Mama isn’t the kind of woman, or by extension, the kind of band, that waits for anyone. They’re forging their own path with catchy music that spans multiple genres, and if “Man Overboard” is any indication of the rest of Tip Top Shape, we’re counting down the days until the album comes out.
